We are the new Sydney CYS NET Team. We started our initial training for NET on January 17th in Brisbane/Sunshine Coast which lasted for 6 weeks. Whilst it was challenging at times it was rewarding because we got to learn how to minister to young people about our Catholic faith. We are now very excited for the mission we have been called to this year. We got to know each other as a team and also do two retreats in Brisbane to prepare us for our mission in Sydney. On February 21st we were commissioned as Catholic missionaries representing the Church of Australia, it was a beautiful Mass and we felt united as a team. Our team is very culturally diverse, consisting of three Canadian team members, (Justin, Gemma-Lee, Kristen) one British team member (Marianne) and two team members from Melbourne (Andrew and Harmony).
We arrived in Sydney on the 23rd of February and hit the ground running starting our involvement with ministry on the 24th by attending City Silence, a weekly Holy Hour held every Tuesday night at St. Mary’s Cathedral which was followed by dinner at St. James Hotel. We were able to meet and get to know some of the young adults who are regulars at City Silence, it was a really good experience and we really enjoyed it as they were really excited to meet us. The first full week of being in Sydney consisted of meeting and greeting many Catholic organisations such as the Catholic Education Office and those who work for the Archdiocese of Sydney, and we got to know the community of Sydney more. The second week we hosted our first Chill ‘N Chat on the Wednesday night which is a coffee club for young adults with mini discussions groups about different topics. Our first night consisted of getting to know the regular Chill ‘N Chat goers and them getting to know us by playing some games. It went really well and we learnt a lot about the young adults who attend Chill N Chat. On the Friday we did two one hour seminars with Strathfield Girls High School using the theme of ‘Encountering Jesus’. This was our first school ministry in Sydney and we really enjoyed the enthusiasm that the students had and how open they were to the topic that we explored.
These past two weeks have been the best two jam packed weeks of our lives and we are very excited for the year ahead and are really enthusiastic about evangelising to the young people of Sydney.
